GREEN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT)

DTI GOES GREEN

The Department of Technology and Information (DTI) has been leading by example - primarily limited within DTI - by lowering its energy consumption, reducing waste, and creating a more environmentally friendly computing environment.

Ongoing Initiatives:

Energy Consumption Reduced 14%*
  • ScriptLogic’s Desktop Authority® helps the State of Delaware implement energy conservation initiatives.
  • DTI has adjusted the temperature in the Dover data center by two degrees, reducing HVAC costs.
  • DTI has enabled PC Power Management on all DTI desktops/laptops through automatic scripts. (shuts down PCs when not in use and uses less energy when not active)
  • DTI has eliminated ancillary appliances from its offices.
  • DTI is replacing CRT monitors with LCD monitors.
  • DTI has installed motion sensor light switches in common areas.

Paper Usage Reduced 10%**
  • An awareness campaign is underway within DTI to "think before printing".
  • DTI has configured printers for default double side printing.
  • DTI has conveniently located recycle bins within the department.
  • DTI has identified and developed applications to eliminate paper. (Performance review application for HR)
  • DTI encourages other agencies to use the Govolution Shopping Cartextranet application.

Green Hardware Deployment (Server Virtualization)
  • After the Virtualization of 54 physical servers, the physical boxes can be powered off, thus saving more than $92,000 annually on energy costs.
  • For the virtualization of 300 servers, the reduction in operating costs would be $1.2 Million.
  • Applications will continue to work as designed, the only change occurring is movement from physical hardware to virtualized servers.
Junk Mail Reduction
  • DTI is leading by example; our mail room contacts vendors and requests a stoppage of catalogs and junk mail for former employees and for those employees who have expressed an interest in no longer receiving unwanted mail.
  • Tips are available online to help reduce the unwanted junk mail you receive.

Current Initiatives:

Statewide Green IT Awareness Campaign
  • Now, through a State-wide awareness campaign, DTI would like to make other State of Delaware organizations (agencies, school districts, entities) aware that a “Go Green - Get Green” initiative can have meaningful rewards for the bottom line and the environment.
  • For more information, contact us at DTI_Green_IT@state.de.us .

Delaware's New Online Payroll Information System (ePay)
  • Governor Markell announced his plans for the implementation of the State of Delaware’s new online payroll information system, ePay. Beginning on Friday, April 24, 2009 state employees will be able to view their live paycheck and pay advice data online through ePay, which will eliminate the need for printed pay advices and sharply decrease the associated printing, delivering and sorting costs.

* DTI saves enough energy monthly to power 10 homes.
** Figures were for the Dover (William Penn) Data Center comparison from FY 2007 to FY 2008.
